Penang

Taken from Lauren's diary of our trip to South East Asia

We got up at 5.15am. Checked out, and the hotel bus left us at the train station. We got on the Bangkok-Butterworth Express (it didn't actually go very fast). We passed through Customs & Imigration and the Malaysian border and arrived at Butterworth. The Eastern & Oriental Express was there. We got a ferry to Penang and a taxi to our hotel, the Cititel. It's nice. We have a good view over the Melaka Straits from our 11th floor room. We walked to the Komtar centre where we ate at McDonalds and sent some e-mails. It was very hot in Penang today. Back to the hotel, showered and washed some clothes. We had some dinner in the restaurant in the hotel (next to the exclusive "Foo Ling Men" restaurant).

Phucket and Hat Yai

Taken from Lauren's diary of our trip to South East Asia

Got up. Had breakfast and packed up. We paid and were left at the airport, Phucket International. We flew to Hat Yai in the south of Thailand via Trang. We got picked up and brought to the JB Hotel which is nice. We were dropped off at the train station so we could buy tickets to Penang for tomorrow morning, but we wouldn't buy them in advance. The train station was yuk, with lots of yuk people hanging around it. We walked around a bit - Hat Yai is not very nice. We found a McDonalds and had some food. We walked more (still yuk) and went into an internet cafe close to our hotel. We sent an e-mail home. Back to the hotel (phew). Showered. Dinner in the Jazz Bistro in the hotel and a good band (New Wave Band).

We still had burnt and sore feet. Had breakfast. It rained. We watched TV and played chess. Lunch, the weather got nice and we went down and sat on the beach (in the shade). Andy went for a swim in the sea - he has a very big blister on his foot and managed to catch a large jellyfish on his arm. Lauren read her book. Dinner.

We got up and both had very burnt feet. Had breakfast. It rained. We spent the day in the bungalow watching MTV and playing chess. We had lunch and dinner in the restaurant. Very sore feet.

Got up and had breakfast in the restaurant. We went for a walk along the beach. It was a fantastic day (we got very sunburnt, especially on the feet, in spite of wearing lots of suncream). Very painful. Shower and dinner in the restaurant.

Bangkok

We had breakfast in the hotel. We sat down in the lounge and tried to sort out some of the days on the holiday as yet unaccounted for. We got a taxi to the airport and at the airport Andy phoned the Cool Point Hotel in the Cameron Highlands and booked two nights. We flew with Thai Airways to Phucket. A man picked us up at the airport and brought us to the Bang Tao Lagoon Bungalows. We had a quaint and quirky little bungalow. We went for a walk on the beach, had a shower and then dinner in the restaurant.

Bangkok

Got up and had breakfast in the hotel (with small ghost-like poached eggs). We got a taxi to near Wat Pho and then walked to the river and hired a long-tail boat and a driver. He took us on a tour of the Khlongs (canals) including a stop for feeding some strange fish. Afterwards, we got a taxi. Our driver told us if we looked around a shop he brought us to, he would get petrol vouchers and we wouldn't have to pay him for the taxi ride (we were suspicious, but had little choice all the same). Andy bought a tie. Sure enough we got our taxi ride free and arrived at the World Trade Centre (a big shopping centre). We walked around, had some lunch and e-mailed home. Then we taxied back to our hotel. This evening we walked in the street market near our hotel and had dinner in a Deli France (french bakery). Andy got a fake Breitling watch and a fake Oakley T-shirt. Lauren got a ring a hairclip, a sarong and a fake polo T-shirt for under a tenner. Back to the hotel and watched some TV.

We got up, missing the hotel breakfast by setting Andy's alarm clock to ring at the right time at home. We got a taxi to the Royal Grand Palace. We went around in and to the Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). They were very ornated and beautiful. We had some water and a coconut each at a little place there (you get a green coconut with the top cut off, drink the milk with a straw and eat the flesh with a spoon). Then we got a tuk-tuk to Wat Pho, more ornate stuff (lovely) and a huge (46m long) reclining Buddha (the largest in Thailand). After that we walked down a dodgy little street and got a long-tail boat for a hairy ride across the river to Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn). It was nice. We walked to a main road and got a taxi back to our hotel. We went for a walk down Sukhumvit Road (near our hotel) and went to McDonalds for tea. We walked through some street market back to the hotel.

Bangkok

We arrived in Bangkok and got a taxi to our hotel, The Ambassador. We got to our room. At about lunch time, we got a taxi to Jim Thompson's house, the house of an American man who started the worldwide trade in Thai silk. It was very nice. We had lunch there and then walked back to our hotel along Sukhumvit Road. We showered and had dinner in the restaurant in the hotel. Bed (very tired, but we seemed to get away with no jetlag).

Leaving Cambridge

Taken from Lauren's diary of our trip to South East Asia

Got up at 2.50 and got the bus to Heathrow. We flew on Kuwait Airlines flight KU104 to Kuwait and spent about 4 hours there (36 degrees C at night, but luckily with air conditioning in the airport). We then caught flight KU411 on to Bangkok.
